UNICEF Executive Director witnesses fading optimism and dangerous conditions for children in Gaza

UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell visited the Gaza Strip and witnessed the devastating impact of the conflict on children and their families. She condemned the grave violations against children, including killings, maimings, attacks on schools and hospitals, and the denial of humanitarian access. Over 4,600 children have been killed and nearly 9,000 injured in Gaza. The use of explosive weapons in populated areas has resulted in collapsed buildings and homes, leaving many children missing or buried under rubble. The lack of power and medical supplies in hospitals has led to the deaths of newborn babies. UNICEF and its partners are working to provide humanitarian aid, but the limited fuel supply hampers their efforts. Russell called for the protection of children, an immediate humanitarian ceasefire, the release of abducted and detained children, and safe and unimpeded access for humanitarian actors.
