UN Rejects Damascus' Conditions for Aid Delivery to Northwest Syria

The United Nations agency responsible for overseeing humanitarian aid has deemed the conditions imposed by the Syrian government on aid deliveries from Turkey to northwest Syria as "unacceptable." The Syrian proposal, which includes restrictions on communication with "terrorist organizations" and the requirement for aid delivery to be overseen by the Red Cross or Red Crescent, hinders the ability to carry out safe and unimpeded humanitarian operations. The Syrian government's request for full cooperation and coordination with Damascus is also under review, as it may infringe on the impartiality, neutrality, and independence of the United Nations' humanitarian operations. Aid delivery to the rebel-held enclave in northwest Syria has been a contentious issue, with the government and its ally Russia advocating for all aid to be run through Damascus, while opponents of Assad and humanitarian organizations argue for direct deliveries to the vulnerable population.
