Another Top Russian General Arrested in Expanding Corruption Purge

Lt. Gen. Vadim Shamarin, a deputy chief of the Russian military general staff, has been arrested on large-scale bribery charges, marking the latest in a series of high-ranking military officials detained for corruption. This follows the recent arrests of Maj. Gen. Ivan Popov and Deputy Defense Minister Timur Ivanov. Shamarin, who also heads the defense ministry’s main communications directorate, is being held for two months. The arrests come amid ongoing scrutiny and accusations of incompetence and corruption within Russia's military leadership, particularly following the failed mutiny by mercenary leader Yevgeny Prigozhin.
