French President Emmanuel Macron had urged Chinese leader Xi Jinping to "bring Russia to its senses" during a meeting in Beijing. Xi called for peace talks to "resume as soon as possible" later in the day. China has claimed neutrality in the conflict, but Western governments have expressed skepticism over its peace plan, which does not call for Russian troops to withdraw from occupied Ukrainian territories.
