International Concerns Over China and Russia's Support for North Korea in Austin

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin expressed concerns that China and Russia are helping North Korea expand its military capabilities by enabling it to evade UN sanctions. The United Nations Command (UNC) and South Korea pledged a united response to any aggression from North Korea. Austin accused North Korea of supplying military equipment to Russia for use in its war with Ukraine, and Moscow of providing technical military support to North Korea. China, North Korea's closest ally, denied any wrongdoing. North Korea called for the dissolution of the UNC, labeling it a "US tool for confrontation." Austin and South Korean Defense Minister Shin agreed to revise a bilateral security agreement to deter North Korea's nuclear and missile threats.
