Russia Expands Naval Presence with New Base in Abkhazia
TL;DR
Abkhazia's leader has agreed to allow Russia to establish a naval base in the Black Sea port of Novorossysk, citing a need to increase defense capabilities following Ukrainian attacks on Russia's fleet in Sevastopol. The move has raised concerns about Russia's expanding naval presence and potential annexation plans, while Georgia considers the region to be under Russian occupation. Only four other countries recognize Abkhazia's independence.
