China's Pacific Drills: A Strategic Focus on the U.S.

The recent drills conducted by the Chinese aircraft carrier Shandong in the Western Pacific were primarily aimed at showcasing China's military capabilities to the United States, rather than Taiwan, according to a Taiwanese defense expert. The drills were intended to test China's Anti-Access/Area Denial capabilities in the event of a cross-strait conflict. The expert also noted that the Chinese drills coincided with a joint maritime exercise conducted by the US, South Korea, and Canada in the Yellow Sea. Taiwan's defense experts have warned that the Shandong's ability to conduct drills in the Pacific Ocean poses a serious threat to eastern Taiwan, emphasizing the need to enhance air defense capabilities in the region.
