Mayon volcano forces thousands to evacuate in the Philippines

Mount Mayon, the most active volcano in the Philippines, is spewing lava and sulfuric gas, prompting thousands of residents to flee. The Albay province has been placed under a state of emergency, and residents within a 7-kilometer radius of the volcano have been placed under "preparedness status." The alert status of the volcano has been raised to Level 3, indicating a dangerous eruption is possible in the coming days or weeks. The Philippines is home to around 300 volcanoes, of which 24 are active.
