Cameroon's Opposition Leader John Fru Ndi Passes Away at 81

John Fru Ndi, the founder of Cameroon's opposition Social Democratic Front (SDF) and a champion of democracy, has died at the age of 81. Fru Ndi was known for his bravery in challenging the one-party state in the 1990s and campaigning for the rights of the English-speaking minority in Cameroon. He founded the SDF in 1990 and his popularity led the regime to accept a multi-party system. Fru Ndi's party believed he won the 1992 presidential election, but the Supreme Court judge that heard its petition alleging fraud let the official results granting victory to incumbent Paul Biya stand.
