African Union Takes Action Against Niger's Coup with Sanctions

The African Union (AU) has suspended Niger from all its activities and called for targeted sanctions against the junta members following last month's military coup. The AU also rejected any interference by non-African states and endorsed the broad sanctions imposed by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). ECOWAS has been trying to negotiate with the junta but is prepared to send troops into Niger if diplomatic efforts fail. The AU called for the immediate release of the detained elected President Mohamed Bazoum and urged the coup leaders to return to their barracks. The coup has raised concerns among Western allies and democratic African states about the potential expansion of Islamist groups in the Sahel region and increased Russian influence.
