President Joe Biden has authorized future sanctions against individuals who are destabilizing Sudan and committing violence against civilians or perpetuating other human rights abuses. The move comes as violent clashes continue between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, leading to a humanitarian crisis. The administration has not yet imposed sanctions using the new executive order. The US has helped facilitate the evacuation of over 1,300 American citizens from Sudan since mid-April. The announcement is targeted to the current crisis and does not restart the previous sanctions regime against Sudan that was lifted in 2017.
