Europe must defend itself: Von der Leyen pushes mutual defence and EU autonomy

At the Munich Security Conference, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen challenged Mark Rutte’s warning that Europe cannot guarantee its security without the US, insisting Europe should activate Article 42.7 mutual defence, speed up decision-making, and build greater EU defence autonomy while expanding security partnerships with allies like the UK, Norway, Iceland, and Canada.
