Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei pledged his unconditional support for the "Republic of Taiwan" during his visit to the island nation, which comes as China increases pressure on countries that maintain formal ties with Taiwan. Guatemala is one of only 13 countries with official diplomatic ties with Taiwan. Giammattei referred twice to the "Republic of Taiwan" instead of its official name, the Republic of China, and pledged "absolute support" to deepen cooperation in all areas. China views Taiwan as its own territory and has condemned Giammattei's trip.
