Iran and Saudi Arabia have agreed to restore diplomatic ties and reopen embassies and consulates within two months, after a seven-year rift that fueled conflicts across the Middle East. The deal was facilitated by China, which is increasingly playing a role in the region. The detente could help stabilize the Middle East, where the two sides have supported sectarian proxy forces that are either at daggers drawn or openly at war.
