Kenya's Opposition Leader Suspends Anti-Government Protests

Kenyan opposition leader Raila Odinga has suspended anti-government protests following an appeal from President William Ruto, who suggested creating a bipartisan parliamentary committee to work through concerns over the electoral process. Odinga has disputed Ruto’s victory in 2022 and has been pushing for reforms to the electoral commission. The opposition has been protesting against high living costs and alleged fraud in last year’s vote, with at least three people killed, 400 wounded and some businesses looted. Odinga said he saw Ruto’s statement as an olive branch and a “positive development” but reserved the right to call for demonstrations should the process not bear fruit.
