Netanyahu Backtracks on Firing Defense Minister Amid Protests and Security Concerns

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reversed his decision to fire Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, amid a surge of violence in the country. Gallant had warned that Netanyahu's judicial overhaul was harming the military. The move triggered protests against the already unpopular plan to disempower the judiciary. Netanyahu's popularity has been further shaken by a poll showing that only 27% of respondents "rely on the government to handle the wave of terror". The poll also showed a surge in popularity for former defence minister Benny Gantz and his centre-right National Unity party.
