"The Enduring Legacy of the Iraq War: 20 Years Later"

Despite the U.S. invasion of Iraq 20 years ago, American forces remain in the country with roughly 2,500 troops scattered around the country, largely in military installations in Baghdad and in the north. The limited but continued troop level is critical as a show of commitment to the region and a hedge against Iranian influence and weapons trafficking. The much-stated reason for the continued U.S. troop presence is to help Iraq battle the remnants of the Islamic State insurgency and prevent any resurgence.
