2,400-Year-Old Shipwreck Off Andros Reveals Ancient Amphora Cargo

Divers near Andros in Greece uncovered a roughly 2,400-year-old shipwreck at depths of 128–144 feet, carrying about 600–650 pointed-bottom amphorae. Archaeologists identified three amphora types (Mende, Peparethos, Solokha 2) and recovered one of each for sampling; a lead anchor stock and possible ballast stones were also found. Dated to the late 5th–early 4th centuries BC, the cargo offers insights into Late Classical trade and navigation, with further study planned to determine contents and origin.
