The Conflict in Ukraine: Russia's Role

There are conflicting reports about who controls Bakhmut, a city in eastern Ukraine, with Russia's Wagner mercenary group claiming to have taken it on Saturday. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky denies this, saying Ukrainian soldiers remain in the city. The commander of Ukraine's army acknowledged that the area his fighters still claim within city limits is "insignificant," but Ukraine has made significant progress in the Bakhmut suburbs and other areas immediately outside the city. Zelensky met with G7 leaders in Japan to appeal for support against Russian aggression and to discuss the situation in Ukraine.
