An 11-year-old girl from Sierra Leone survived three days at sea by clinging to tire inner tubes after a migrant boat sank off Italy, likely making her the sole survivor among 45 passengers. She was rescued by the Trotamar III, a vessel from the charity Compass Collective, near Lampedusa. Despite suffering from hypothermia, she was alert and responsive. The central Mediterranean route is one of the deadliest migration paths, with over 30,900 deaths since 2014. Calls for safer migration routes and better search and rescue operations have been renewed.
