U.S. deploys 600 Army troops to Latin America for anti-cartel training
The U.S. military is deploying approximately 600 soldiers from the 10th Mountain Division to Latin America to conduct joint exercises and support anti-drug trafficking operations. The troops are being forward-staged under U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM), with initial deployments to a new jungle training facility in Panama. Subsequent training is planned with local forces in Colombia and Honduras. This move expands the Trump administration’s broader campaign against drug networks, which has included dozens of strikes and over 235 fatalities in the past year. Additionally, several hundred other soldiers from the division are expected to staff a new Western Hemisphere military command in Miami.
