Democrats seize election oversight in key battlegrounds and red states after 2026 midterms
Democrats won secretary of state races in Arizona, Michigan, Nevada, Georgia, Indiana, and Ohio, securing election administration authority in critical states for the 2028 presidential cycle. These victories follow a broader Democratic surge in the 2026 midterms, including gubernatorial wins in traditionally red states like Texas and Ohio, and Senate flips in Texas and South Carolina. While the party gained control of election offices in battlegrounds and some GOP-leaning territories, Republicans retained the office in Iowa and South Carolina despite losing other statewide races. Analysts attribute the shift to voter fatigue with President Trump, economic concerns, and the Iran conflict, though some caution against viewing this as a permanent realignment.
