Herzog’s 6K IMAX Return to the Cave of Forgotten Dreams
Werner Herzog’s 2010 documentary Cave of Forgotten Dreams is getting a new IMAX release with a 6K restoration and new Atmos sound, after a five-year, shot-by-shot rebuild of the film’s footage. The restoration improves brightness, color, and the immersive 3D experience, leveraging upgraded technology that wasn’t available during the original production, which faced extreme low-light conditions and a tiny crew in the Chauvet Cave. The film will premiere in IMAX mid-April before a nationwide arthouse rollout, with Herzog citing ongoing projects (including Bucking Fastard and a Bong Joon Ho voice role) as he continues to stay prolific at 83. Restoration producer James Stewart notes the work aimed to make the cave’s art endure for the next 30,000 years.
