Supreme Court upholds California worker law AB5.

The US Supreme Court has declined to hear a challenge to California's AB5 law, which classifies political signature-gathering "doorknockers" as employees entitled to payment of wages by the companies that hired them. The law defines workers as employees rather than independent contractors if they are in the same business as the hiring company, or the company controls their activity. The court has previously left the law intact in two other cases. The law has been challenged by freelance journalists and photographers, trucking companies, and ride-hailing companies such as Uber and Lyft.

U.S. Appeals Court Revives Uber's Challenge to California Contractor Law.

Uber and Postmates' lawsuit challenging California's AB5 law, which requires companies to provide more proof that workers are independent contractors, has been revived by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. The court said the state must face claims that the law is unconstitutional because it singles out app-based transportation businesses while exempting many other industries. AB5 imposes a higher bar to show that workers are independent contractors rather than employees, who have greater legal protections and can cost companies up to 30% more.
