"Carbon Dioxide and Water Conversion: Advancing Towards Sustainable Acetylene Production"
Researchers from Doshisha University and Daikin Industries, Ltd., Japan, have developed a promising strategy to produce acetylene (C2H2) using carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O) as raw materials. The approach involves electrochemical and chemical conversion of CO2 into C2H2 using high-temperature molten salts, leveraging metal carbides as a pivot point in the process. This innovative method offers advantages over conventional synthesis pathways, including the direct use of CO2 as feedstock and the potential for carbon negative emission technology. The research represents a significant step towards sustainable resource and energy cycles without relying on fossil fuels, with potential applications in achieving carbon neutrality and building sustainable societies.
