Researchers have developed a new acoustic side-channel attack on keyboards that can deduce user input based on typing patterns, even in noisy environments. The method achieves an average success rate of 43% and does not require controlled recording conditions or a specific typing platform, making it more applicable in real attacks. By capturing typing samples and training a statistical model, the attack can decipher the overall target's input with some post-capture analysis. However, it may be ineffective for individuals with inconsistent typing patterns or those who type very fast, and the amplitude of the produced waveform is less accentuated when using silent keyboards, which can lower keystroke detection rates.
