"FDA Greenlights First Drug for Severe Frostbite Treatment"
The FDA has approved Aurlumyn, the first medication to treat severe frostbite in adults, manufactured by Actelion Pharmaceuticals US, Inc. Frostbite is an injury caused by cold temperatures, and severe cases can lead to amputation. Aurlumyn, containing the active ingredient iloprost, is a vasodilator that helps improve blood flow and prevent clotting. In a controlled trial, patients receiving Aurlumyn had lower rates of amputation compared to those receiving unapproved medications. Common side effects include flushing, headache, nausea, and dizziness.
