US Military Implements Mental Health Support Law After Delay

The Pentagon has finally implemented the Brandon Act, a law requiring them to provide mental health services for troops seeking help, after a delay of more than a year. The law is named after Brandon Caserta, a 21-year-old sailor who took his own life in June 2018. The military services have 45 days to implement the Brandon Act for active-duty troops. The law requires a mental health evaluation and allows service members to ask for help confidentially to reduce the stigma around mental health.

Biden Administration Deploys 1,500 Troops to Southern Border.

President Biden is sending 1,500 active-duty troops to the southern border with Mexico to assist with transportation, administrative duties, warehouse support, narcotics detection, and data entry. The decision comes as the Biden administration fears that the lifting of a public health rule that allowed officials to quickly expel migrants could lead to an increase in border crossings. The troops will supplement 2,500 National Guard troops who are already at the border and will likely remain there for 90 days.

Biden Administration Deploys 1,500 Troops to Southern Border Ahead of Expected Migrant Surge.

The Department of Defense is sending 1,500 additional active-duty troops to the US-Mexico border for a temporary three-month period ahead of an expected surge of migrants with the end of Title 42 restrictions on May 11. They will join 2,500 National Guard members already there on an active-duty status assisting Border Patrol agents with ground-based detection and monitoring. The new troops will also help with data entry and warehouse support, but will not have a direct role in interacting with migrants at the border.

The Biden administration plans to send 1,500 more active-duty troops to the southern border to assist agents ahead of an expected influx of migrants seeking asylum. The troops will not have a law enforcement role but will perform monitoring and administrative tasks, freeing up Border Patrol officials to process migrant claims. The move comes as Title 42, the public-health law that permits the U.S. to deny asylum and migrations claims for public health reasons, is set to expire on May 11.
