Argentina Mandates National Minute of Applause for Messi in All Football Matches
The Argentine Football Association (AFA) has instituted a permanent minute-long pause in the 10th minute of all domestic football matches to honor Lionel Messi following his international retirement. This tribute, which applies to men's and women's football, futsal, and beach soccer, began with a Copa Argentina match. The decision follows Messi's announcement that the 2026 World Cup was his final appearance for the national team, where he finished as the all-time top scorer with 125 goals in 207 caps. Messi, who will continue playing for Inter Miami until 2028, cited personal loss and a sense of completion as reasons for his departure from international duty.
