NATO Launches Historic Air Defense Exercise.

NATO has begun its largest-ever air exercise, "Air Defender 23", involving 250 military aircraft from 25 NATO members and partner states, including Japan and Sweden. The exercise aims to strengthen interoperability and protection against drones and cruise missiles in the event of an attack on cities, airports or ports located on NATO territory. The drill was designed in 2018, partly in response to Russia's 2014 annexation of Crimea, though it's not specifically targeting "anyone". The exercise may impact multiple European airspaces, but planners will do "everything in their power" to limit flight delays or cancellations.

"NATO's Largest Air Exercise to Take Place in Germany"

Germany is hosting NATO's biggest ever air exercise over Europe next week with 250 planes from member countries simulating the alliance's response to an attack on Europe. The exercise could cause some disruption to civilian flight schedules and create extra noise. The United States alone is sending 2,000 U.S. Air National Guard personnel and about 100 aircraft to take part in the June 12-23 training manoeuvres. The exercise is intended to impress allies and potential adversaries such as Russia, and to demonstrate the agility and swiftness of the allied force in NATO as a first responder.

NATO's Expansion and Military Exercises: Implications for Russia and Beyond

NATO countries will launch the largest military air exercise in its history, Exercise Air Defender, in June, with over 220 aircraft and 10,000 participants from 24 nations. The exercise aims to project a united front in Europe as Russia's yearlong war in Ukraine slides toward stalemate. Around half of those assets will belong to the U.S. Air National Guard, which is dispatching units from 46 wings across the country, an unusual show of force for the part-time component.
