The FAA plans an $875 million, 12-year rollout of SMART, an AI tool to predict air traffic flows and flag potential conflicts for DC-area airspace and, later, nationwide; it will provide alternative route information without changing procedures, sits atop a new Flow Management Data backbone, and is backed by Air Space Intelligence’s Flyways AI as part of broader modernization amid controller shortages and aging infrastructure.
