Newark-Philly flight disruptions ease after backup feed outage
Flight disruptions in Newark and Philadelphia eased on Tuesday after a fiber-optic cable cut in central New Jersey knocked out a backup air-traffic control feed, snarling travel the day before. As of 7:10 a.m. ET, about 60 flights at Newark were canceled (roughly 5% of the day’s schedule) and around 30 at Philadelphia (about 2%), down from Monday’s widespread outages when hundreds of flights were affected and many international arrivals were diverted to other cities. The FAA switched to the damaged backup system after the main one failed, and United Airlines offered flight attendants extra pay to pick up Newark trips to ease delays.
