Man charged with murder of five-year-old Indigenous girl as protests erupt in Alice Springs
Northern Territory police say 47-year-old Jefferson Lewis has been charged with the murder of five-year-old Indigenous girl Kumanjayi Little Baby, plus two other offences, and will appear in Darwin court. The killing sparked protests in Alice Springs, where hundreds of Indigenous demonstrators clashed with police and tear gas was deployed; the victim’s body was found after a days-long search. Lewis has prior assault convictions and had recently been released from prison.
