Surge in Invasive Meningococcal Disease Cases Alarms Virginia's Health Officials
The Roanoke City and Alleghany Health District has reported a recent increase in invasive meningococcal disease, with three cases recorded in the past 18 months compared to only two cases in the previous decade. While the disease is rare, it can lead to meningitis, which can be deadly. Health officials are urging awareness and vaccination, particularly for children who are now required to be vaccinated against meningitis, and for adults who are immune compromised to consider additional vaccination.
