Unknown Michigan hopeful shocks Trump pick in tight GOP primary
Thomas Smith, a virtually unknown candidate who had raised almost no money, won Michigan’s 8th District Republican primary over Trump-endorsed Amir Hassan. With most votes counted, Smith led Hassan 50% to 33%, with Al Lemmo at 16%. Smith had suspended his campaign in July and later endorsed Lemmo; the district Trump carried by 2 points in 2024 remains a GOP target for the fall race.
