Political row erupts over minister's tribute to all A66 crash victims
A political dispute has emerged regarding Home Office minister Anna Turley's tribute to the seven victims of the A66 crash near Middlesbrough. Shadow justice secretary Nick Timothy criticized Turley for equating the two police officers killed with the five men in the oncoming vehicle, arguing that the latter were engaged in serious criminal activity. Turley defended her actions, stating she was unaware of the identities of all victims at the time and that Cleveland Police had requested a tribute to all deceased. The crash, which occurred on Saturday, resulted in the deaths of PCs Matthew Blades and Tom Clough, along with five young men aged 17 to 23. Investigations have linked the incident to organized crime, with 17 arrests made to date. The controversy has intensified scrutiny of social media trends that glorify dangerous driving, prompting government calls for tech companies to remove such content.
