Cincinnati Doctor Leads NIH-Funded Trial to Target CMD in ANOCA Patients

Dr. Odayme Quesada in Cincinnati has secured a $3.6 million NIH grant to lead the nation’s first clinical trial of a treatment for CMD in ANOCA. The five‑year study will test the diabetes/heart failure drug dapagliflozin against a placebo in 120 men and women, enrolling at The Christ Hospital Health Network with University of Cincinnati researchers as collaborators; enrollment is expected to begin fall 2026.

"Assessing the Need for Mental Stress Testing in ANOCA"

Mental stress induced a greater degree of myocardial ischemia among women with angina without obstructive coronary artery disease (ANOCA) than among those without ANOCA. Mental stress–induced myocardial ischemia (MSIMI) was not statistically related to coronary microvascular dysfunction (CMD). Routine mental stress testing in patients with ANOCA seems necessary. ANOCA patients may benefit from treatment with escitalopram. Clinicians should conduct the gold standard workup ― provocative physiologic testing ― for women who continue to have chest pain when results of other tests are negative.
