Leipzig/Halle: Europe's key cargo hub repeatedly targeted by sabotage

Leipzig/Halle Airport, a major European cargo and military hub, has again become the target of security incidents after a drone rigged with explosives was found, with officials calling it a 'hybrid attack' and signaling a new level of threat. The site has a history of drone intrusions and past sabotage, including incendiary parcels in 2024, underscoring its status as a high-value target in Germany’s critical infrastructure. Leipzig/Halle’s role as a global logistics centre and NATO heavy-lift node—home to SALIS operations and Antonov aircraft—has intensified the perspective that Russia’s hybrid warfare tactics are being tested in Europe. Germany has expanded drone defenses, but experts warn that detection and early intervention remain crucial in what officials describe as an arms race between attackers and security forces.

Ukraine's Antonov Adopts Drones Amid Russian Invasion

Ukrainian aerospace firm Antonov is expanding its drone manufacturing capabilities in response to Russia's invasion, according to a presentation by Ukraine's defense group Ukroboronprom. The move aligns with Ukraine's goal of becoming a global drone hub and diversifying its core cargo plane business. Antonov's new drone center aims to enhance unmanned systems manufacturing capabilities and support private unmanned systems manufacturers. The expertise gained from cargo plane manufacturing could also be applied to long-distance drones, potentially enabling Ukraine's armed forces to strike deeper into Russian territory. The restructuring at Ukroboronprom is part of Ukraine's broader plan to invest in the defense sector and develop the post-war economy.

Ukraine Plans to Revive Destroyed Antonov An-225 Plane.

Ukraine plans to rebuild the Antonov An-225 cargo plane, known as the Mriya, which was destroyed during Russia's invasion. The plane was the pride of Ukraine and was designed for aviation superlatives. The current plan is to use what remains of the destroyed plane as the basis for a new one, equipped with modernized engines and new electronic on-board equipment. The cost of rebuilding the plane is estimated to be close to a billion US dollars, but Antonov officials believe it should be done as the plane is a symbol of Ukraine.
