SEALAB's Ocean Colony Dream Ends in Tragedy and a Quiet Fade
SEALAB in the 1960s tested whether humans could live underwater to enable ocean colonization. After early successes (SEALAB I–II) and extended stays, SEALAB III ended tragically with Berry Cannon’s death from likely carbon-dioxide asphyxiation, leading the Navy to end saturation-diving experiments by 1970. Offshore diving and robotic work persisted, while the underwater-colonization dream faded; Aquarius Reef Base remains a functioning undersea lab, and much of SEALAB’s hardware lives on only as museum relics.
