New Belmont Park Opens as a $555M Gamble on Racing's Future
New York’s rebuilt Belmont Park reopened for racing after a three-year, $555 million renovation, marking the first time the venue has hosted a meet since 2023. The new facility, financed by a $455 million state loan and $100 million from the New York Racing Association (NYRA), features a smaller, modern grandstand, expanded green space, and a winter-ready synthetic track. The opening weekend was headlined by Japanese star Forever Young, who won the Jockey Club Gold Cup, but the event highlighted a tension between modernizing the venue for a younger, affluent audience and the loss of the accessible, low-cost culture of the recently closed Aqueduct racetrack.
