New Line Cinema and Stephen Colbert are developing a LOTR sequel, The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past, using a post-Return of the King framing with flashbacks to material Tolkien cut. The story centers on Sam Gamgee's eldest daughter Elanor, detailing her Fourth Age birth, a Gondor visit, marriage to Fastred of Greenholm, and her role preserving the Red Book, with hints it may intersect Aragorn and Arwen’s timeline. Release date is not announced yet.
