A fire on a maintenance vacuum train at the Astor Place station in Lower Manhattan injured 14 people and disrupted service on the Lexington Avenue Line for several hours; eight MTA workers and six firefighters were among the injured. The blaze was under control by about 5:30 a.m., and the line reopened around 7 a.m. with severe delays as investigators probe the cause.
Wegmans, an upstate New York grocery chain, has opened a new location in the East Village at Astor Place. The iconic Cube sculpture, officially known as the Alamo, has returned to Astor Place in New York City after undergoing repairs. Installed in 1967, the 1,800-pound sculpture had been in disrepair since 2021 when its spinning mechanism broke. The Cube was sent to a foundry in Connecticut for refurbishment, including a new weatherproof spinning mechanism and a paint job. The repairs, costing $100,000, are expected to keep the Cube turning for another 20 years. Before its return, the Cube took a brief vacation in the Hamptons as part of an art fair.
