
Decoding the Brain's Noise-Canceling Mechanism in Speech
Researchers have identified how the brain filters out background noise during speech through auditory corollary discharge signals between the motor and auditory cortices. These signals, originating in the motor cortex's precentral gyrus and traveling to the auditory cortex's superior temporal gyrus, help distinguish one's own voice from external sounds. Disruptions in this system may contribute to auditory hallucinations in schizophrenia and stuttering. The findings could lead to new diagnostic and management approaches for speech-related disorders.
