Beluga relocation begins as 30 whales leave shuttered Marineland for new homes
Relocation teams are moving about 30 beluga whales from Marineland Canada to AZA-accredited aquariums in the U.S. and Spain after NOAA granted an emergency rescue permit; the first batch (six whales) has arrived at Shedd Aquarium in Chicago and SeaWorld San Antonio, with follow-on transfers planned to Georgia Aquarium, SeaWorld San Diego, Oceanografic Valencia and Mystic Aquarium, all under close veterinary oversight to help the whales acclimate and prevent euthanasia.
