Titan Rain Could Build Cell-Like Membranes in Methane Lakes
A 2025 study proposes that Titan’s methane rain could mechanically assemble hollow, bilayer vesicles from surface-organic films as droplets are splashed into and out of coated lakes, creating cell-like compartments in a cryogenic, nonpolar solvent. The idea is testable but unproven: no vesicles have been observed, and the mechanism relies on specific amphiphilic chemistry. Subsequent experiments have both tested the plausibility of the process and challenged the leading acrylonitrile-based membrane candidate, underscoring the need for laboratory replication and targeted Titan lake experiments or missions to search for hollow structures and refine the scenario.
