WD and HGST drive reliability beats Seagate and Toshiba in large fleet study

An IEEE peer‑reviewed study using Backblaze data (443,156 HDDs across 2013–Q2 2025, ~1.66 million drive-years) found HGST and Western Digital drives have lower adjusted failure rates than Seagate and Toshiba after accounting for age, capacity, temperature, and form factor. HGST failed at about 41% of Seagate’s rate; WD about 52%; Toshiba about 107%. The analysis addresses fleet-age biases and notes Toshiba’s failures rise sharply after ~60 months. Higher temperatures increase failure risk (about 2.1% per 1°C; ~23% per 10°C), while larger capacity drives tended to fail less (roughly 3.4% fewer failures per extra TB). Results pertain to enterprise data-center drives, not consumer PCs, and reflect biases from evolving drive mixes. About 0.52% of drives were removed without a recorded failure. Backblaze’s 2025 annualized failure rate was 1.36%.

Backblaze, a backup and cloud storage company, has conducted a study of 17,155 failed hard disk drives (HDDs) and found that the average age at which the drives failed was 2 years and 6 months. The study included 72 different models and did not include failed boot drives, drives that had no SMART raw attribute data, or drives with out-of-bounds data. Seagate's 12TB ST12000NM0007 saw 2,023 failures, occurring when each drive was, on average, 1 year and 6 months old. The only model with more failures was the 4TB Seagate ST400DM000.

The Declining Reliability of HDDs: Is it Time to Switch to SSDs?

Backblaze has published its quarterly hard disk drive failure rate statistics, revealing that the annualized failure rates (AFR) have remained relatively stable. As the HDD population grows, the average AFR is 1.54 percent. The latest report shows a recovery in drive reliability after a 10TB failure rate peak, with the newest 16TB drives being the most reliable in Backblaze's HDD buying history. Seagate has the lowest reliability rating, and the average age of failed drives is two years and six months. Backblaze's HDD test data page is available for public use, but users must cite Backblaze as the source and cannot sell the data.
