Bobby Bonilla Day Reaches 16th Installment as Mets’ Deferred Pay Continues to 2035
July 1 marks the 16th Bobby Bonilla Day, with the former Mets star collecting about $1.2M from a 2000 contract buyout; his deferred payments began in 2011 and have totaled $19,091,971.20, continuing annually on July 1 through 2035. He also has a separate deferred deal with the Orioles for $500K each July 1 through 2028. The Mets’ buyout, negotiated after his 1999 season and release in 2000, will total about $29.8M by the final payment. Steve Cohen has teased Citi Field celebrations for Bonilla Day, though none are set; Bonilla’s MLB career ended after 2001.
