Sudan's military factions, led by army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and paramilitary commander General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, were preparing for all-out war in the weeks leading up to the recent violence that has killed at least 512 people. Despite last-ditch mediation efforts, neither of the two most powerful men showed up to a meeting, and fighting broke out across the country. The armed forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) blamed each other publicly for sparking the violence and attempting a power grab. The conflict has deepened the country's already grave humanitarian crisis.
