GOP Lawmakers Defend Trump’s Canada Tariffs Despite Midterm Risks
U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer met with House Republicans on September 2, 2026, to address concerns over the escalating trade war with Canada and controversial beef import plans. While most GOP members publicly supported President Trump’s strategy, blaming Ottawa for the breakdown in negotiations, some lawmakers from border states expressed private worries about economic impacts ahead of the November midterms. The administration maintains that Canada is acting irrationally, while Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney accuses the U.S. of bad-faith tactics. Separately, ranchers and some Republicans are pressuring the White House to reverse plans to import 300,000 metric tons of foreign beef, a move that has angered traditional agricultural allies.
