Stellantis Negotiates with Unifor Amidst Belvidere Assembly Plant Strike

Stellantis has reached a tentative agreement with the United Auto Workers (UAW) to reopen the Belvidere Assembly Plant in Illinois, which had been idled eight months ago, and add over a thousand jobs at a new battery plant in Belvidere. The plant will produce a new midsize pickup truck, potentially a successor to the Dodge Dakota, based on the STLA Large unibody architecture. The pickup will offer both electrified and internal combustion engine power. The state of Illinois has secured additional land for the battery facility, and more details about the plans for Belvidere are expected to be revealed soon.

Stellantis Proposes Belvidere Assembly Plant Restart in UAW Negotiations

Stellantis has offered to restart the Belvidere Assembly Plant and build a battery factory for electric vehicles as part of its latest offer to the United Auto Workers union. The automaker had previously idled the plant, leading to layoffs earlier this year. In addition to restarting the plant, Stellantis has proposed a 25% wage increase for UAW workers, matching offers made by Ford and General Motors. The company also suggested creating a hub for Mopar parts distribution to generate more jobs. Contract talks between Stellantis and the UAW are set to resume on Saturday.

Stellantis' Proposal: Mopar Distribution Center or Facility Closures?

Automaker Stellantis has proposed closing 18 U.S. facilities and creating a Mopar parts distribution center, known as a "Mega Hub," at the idled Belvidere Assembly plant. The plan would consolidate existing Mopar parts and distribution centers into larger facilities, including the proposed Mega Hub. While the deal would not require the closure of other facilities, potential closures of locations where United Auto Workers (UAW) members work must be considered. UAW workers have been on strike at major assembly plants, including Stellantis, demanding better conditions and wages. The reopening of Belvidere Assembly would not employ as many union members as before, and Mopar jobs pay less than traditional assembly factories. Stellantis is also discussing the possibility of using part of Belvidere for electric vehicle battery components.
